A handmade iron candle stand designed specifically for traditional Japanese taper candles. Unlike Western taper holders, Japanese candles are hollow at the base and mount onto a sharp spike — a design that holds the candle upright with nothing touching its sides, creating the impression that it hovers just above the surface.
Each stand is cast iron with a flat, slightly asymmetrical square base and a single tapered point. No two are identical. The simplicity is the point: the object disappears so the candle can be present. Available in two sizes — Small, for Daiyo's colorful rice wax mini candles, and Medium, for the larger Morphe candle.
Sold individually. Each piece varies slightly in shape, as all are handmade.
WHY IT'S SPECIAL
- Designed for Japanese candle construction: the spike-mount system works with the hollow base of traditional Japanese tapers, letting the candle appear to float above the stand rather than sit inside it.
- Each stand is handmade: cast iron with a naturally irregular base — no two pieces are identical, which is the point.
- Two sizes for different candles: Small fits Daiyo's colorful rice wax mini candles; Medium fits the larger Morphe candle.
- Minimal to the point of disappearing: flat, matte iron base that draws no attention to itself — the flame is the object.
- Made in Japan by Daiyo, a family business established in Shiga Prefecture in 1914.

THE BRAND
Daiyo was established in 1914 in Takashima, Shiga Prefecture — home to Lake Biwa and a deep tradition of craft rooted in natural materials. Now in its fourth generation, the family business remains committed to making genuine Japanese candles from 100% vegetable wax, using a hand-layering technique called Tegake in which wax is applied directly by hand and built up in repeated layers around the wick. It takes roughly ten years to become a skilled Tegake craftsman. The iron candle stands, like the candles themselves, are handmade — shaped individually, never perfectly uniform, and better for it.
