This handbuilt oval ceramic vase is a one-of-a-kind piece by Mariette Groen of CATTO Design Studio. Sculpted with a textured surface and subtle irregularities that celebrate the handmade process, the vase features a sinuous snake motif slithering across its form—painted in earthy greens and ochres that seem to shift with the glaze. Dual looped handles add a sculptural touch, while the muted palette and speckled finish give it an ancient-meets-modern spirit. A striking vessel for flowers or simply admired on its own.
Size around: H 8"1/2 W at the largest including handles: 11" 1/2 & 6"1/2 across the oval.
THE BRAND
CATTO Design Studio is based in Brooklyn, NY, and was set up by Dutch artist Mariette Groen. CATTO’s style influences stem from daily life in New York, the artist’s Dutch roots, and extensive time spent in India, Italy, and London.
The ceramic pieces are mostly hand-built, sometimes wheel-thrown, or a combination of both. A wide variation of clays, glazes, and kiln temperatures are used. Experimentation and fluidity of process and design are fundamental to her work.
“When I work, one thing leads to another. It’s very organic, and pieces are always unique. I don’t always know what the result will look like when I start. You open the kiln, and there is a big surprise; I love that”.
In her ever-evolving style, the artist is always trying to convey the beauty and a certain airiness, as well as something unexpected, perhaps giving it a sense of humor.
CATTO’s pieces are not only decorative but also functional. This is a determined choice.
“When I create, I imagine the possible function of a piece, something that is cherished on a daily basis.”
