We trekked to Yugeshima, an isle near Hiroshima, on a mission to find a series of artisanal ceramic vases. The resident ceramist fires his creations using a wood-burning kiln. The ash in a wood kiln can flux or melt glazes, giving them a satin finish instead of a matte one and making them more brilliant. The ash also creates a natural ash glaze. In addition, the flames and ash can paint the pieces, intensifying colors.
This whimsical vase, shaped like a peanut with hands, stands around 5.25" tall and is 4.50" wide at the widest point.
All Yuge vases are handmade in Japan.
