THE TECHNIQUE
Japanese lacquer, or urushi, is a highly prized material refined over 7,000 years. Harvested from the sap of the urushi tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), it contains urushiol—an organic oil that gives the lacquer its durability and glossy finish. After a meticulous treatment lasting three to five years—including filtering, homogenization, and dehydration—the resin becomes a transparent, honey-textured lacquer. This can be tinted in black, red, yellow, green, or brown.
Applied in exceptionally fine successive layers, urushi requires precise drying conditions: temperatures between 25–30°C and humidity levels of 75–80%. This exacting process contributes to its expense but results in an unparalleled, resilient finish.
Bokashi lacquer is a traditional technique that creates a gradient or shaded effect on lacquered objects. Artisans start with a base layer and, while it's still wet, blend different shades or apply metallic powders like gold or silver to achieve smooth color transitions. Careful brushwork and multiple layers produce a subtle, seamless gradient, culminating in a polished, lustrous finish.
