DETAILS
PAPIER-MÂCHÉ CRAFT
The tradition of papier-mâché figures began in 19th-century Neustadt/Sonneberg, originally as filling figures for sweets. Ino Schaller continues to follow the old family recipe: a paper-and-paste mixture is poured into handcrafted molds, dried over several days, then carefully painted and decorated with glitter, glass beads, or fur. Each figure is unique, carrying forward a craft mastered by only a few artisans today.
THE BRAND
Founded in 1894 by Carl Schaller, the family-run Ino Schaller manufactory has preserved the art of papier-mâché for over 120 years. Carl’s son Ino gave the company its name, and today the 4th generation—Thomas Schaller and Christina Franke-Schaller—continues the tradition. Though plastic figures once overshadowed papier-mâché, the Schaller family revived the craft in the 1980s, and their handmade figures are now highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Each piece embodies history, craftsmanship, and a family legacy of artistry.
