Shiso is the herb you find at every Japanese table — placed under sashimi, torn over rice, used as both garnish and medicine for centuries. In perfume, almost no one uses it. Marie Jeanne, based in Grasse, did.
The opening is unmistakably shiso: green, aromatic, faintly spicy, a little like mint but stranger, more savory. Then the rose arrives — or rather, it was always there, and the shiso was simply cutting through it. Bulgarian organic rose, centifolia from Grasse, Turkish rose: three versions of the same flower, each with a different character. Together they read as what a rose actually smells like in a garden, not a perfume counter.
The shiso quiets after half an hour. What remains is a photorealistic rose. — full, slightly green at the edges, warm, not sweet. Iris and cedar hold it upright. Sandalwood from Nepal softens the base without drowning it.
No powder. No nostalgia. No heaviness. Just a very precise, very alive rose, with this peculiar green opening that makes you pay attention.
Created by perfumer Alexis Dadier, this dual composition celebrates the yin and yang of cultures: Grasse’s iconic Rose Centifolia paired with aromatic Shiso, a leaf whose delicate serrated edges echo those of the rose.
