Dogabi Sculptural Jar No. 11 is a vibrant embodiment of the series’ spirit—mischievous, commanding, and alive with color. Its bulbous silhouette and layered glazes give the impression of a myth caught mid-transformation. The single golden eye peers from beneath a crown-like ridge, framed by a fiery grin of teeth plated in 23.5 K gold.
Hand-thrown and sculpted by Hyung Jun Kim at THR-Ceramic Studio in South Korea, this one-of-a-kind work fuses humor with reverence, translating Korean folklore into tactile form.
This piece will be on view at Takamichi Beauty Room in New York on October 22.
WHY IT’S SPECIAL
Formed from traditional Korean stoneware clay, Jar No. 11 underwent a high-temperature oxidation firing at 2,012 °F before a secondary glaze firing at 1,472 °F—processes that reveal Kim’s mastery of both technique and chance. The palette of ochre, green, and scarlet underscores the piece’s playful ferocity, while gold horns and teeth glint like ritual adornments.
Each Dogabi sculpture carries its own mythic charge—a guardian presence meant not for use, but for imagination.
