IPPODO KYOTO SINCE 1717

IPPODO TEA

Ippodo Tea Co., based in the heart of Kyoto, has been crafting and offering the finest quality Japanese green tea for over 300 years. Their tea-making expertise, passed down through generations, ensures that each blend reflects the rich history and unique terroir of the Kyoto region. This area, with its mineral-rich soil, mild misty climate, and a perfect balance of sunshine and rainfall, is renowned for producing some of Japan’s most exquisite green teas.

At Takamichi Beauty Room, we have chosen two of our favorite teas from Ippodo: the Gyokuro Kanro and the Sencha Housen. Both teas represent the pinnacle of Japanese green tea, but they offer distinct flavor profiles and health benefits due to differences in their cultivation and processing.

The Difference Between Gyokuro and Sencha

The key difference between these two teas lies in how they are grown. Sencha, which makes up the majority of Japan's tea production, is grown in full sunlight. This gives it a fresh, slightly astringent flavor with bright, grassy notes. It's a popular everyday tea in Japan, offering a refreshing, clean taste that's perfect for any time of the day.

Gyokuro, on the other hand, is more rare and prized for its complex, umami-rich flavor. The unique taste of Gyokuro comes from a special cultivation technique: it is shaded from the sun for the last three to four weeks before harvest. This shading process reduces the rate of photosynthesis in the tea leaves, increasing the levels of chlorophyll and amino acids such as L-theanine. As a result, Gyokuro develops a deep, rich sweetness with a smooth, mellow aftertaste. It's often described as more luxurious, and refined compared to Sencha.

Antioxidant Power: Why Gyokuro Stands Out

While both Sencha and Gyokuro are packed with health benefits, Gyokuro has the edge when it comes to antioxidant levels. The shading process boosts the concentration of catechins, powerful antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body. These antioxidants have been linked to numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, enhanced immune function, and protection against aging-related damage. Additionally, L-theanine, which is higher in Gyokuro, promotes relaxation and mental clarity without the jittery effects of caffeine.

Sencha is also rich in catechins and antioxidants, making it an excellent choice for those looking to incorporate green tea into their daily routine. Its refreshing flavor and energizing qualities make it a go-to for many tea lovers. However, for those seeking a more concentrated dose of antioxidants and a more complex flavor experience, Gyokuro is an ideal choice.

Our Favorites: Gyokuro Kanro and Sencha Housen

At Takamichi Beauty Room, we’ve selected Gyokuro Kanro and Sencha Housen because they represent the best of what Ippodo has to offer. Gyokuro Kanro delivers an intense umami experience with its smooth, velvety texture and subtly sweet notes, making it a perfect tea for moments of indulgence. Meanwhile, Sencha Housen offers a beautifully balanced cup with a refreshing, clean taste and a hint of bitterness that green tea lovers will appreciate.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy the rich, luxurious flavors of Gyokuro or the bright, refreshing taste of Sencha, both teas bring not only a delightful sensory experience but also a host of health benefits thanks to their high levels of antioxidants. By choosing quality green tea like these, you can elevate your tea ritual while supporting your wellness.
